From Corsets to Catsuits: Women's Clothing in Tennis
<p>This Learning Lab was adapted from the lesson plan "<a href="https://learninglab.si.edu/collections/lesson-plan-from-bloomers-to-balance-beams-girls-and-womens-athletic-wear-throughout-history-grades-9-12-college/ghdcbWnjUtz21JTC" target="_blank">From Bloomers to Balance Beams: Girls' and Women's Athletic Wear Throughout History</a>" created and published by the <a href="https://learninglab.si.edu/org/americanhistory" target="_blank">National Museum of American History</a>.</p>
<p>Learning about girls' and women's athletic wear throughout history gives students a unique opportunity to examine different era's cultural expectations surrounding exercise, as well as reflect on the reasons behind athletic wear's construction.</p>

Every Picture Tells a Story
<p>Just as authors tell a story with words, photographers use cameras to describe people, events, places and emotions. Photographers shape a story by creating and arranging elements in their compositions. Look through the photographs, each photograph outlines some element of composition. These photographs feature Hall of Famers enshrined at the International Tennis Hall of Fame and illustrations of tennis. This lab also includes a glossary, questions to consider, and photography learning resources from other learning labs. </p>

Famous Firsts: Women Who Paved the Way
<p>This collection of resources is excerpted from a collection created by <a href="https://learninglab.si.edu/profile/127240">Jaiha Lee</a> for the <a href="https://learninglab.si.edu/org/ouse">Office of the Under Secretary for Education, Smithsonian Institution</a>. Additional biographies featuring collections from the <a href="https://www.tennisfame.com/">International Tennis Hall of Fame</a> have been added to the resource.</p>
<p>This collection draws upon the K-8 "<a href="https://learninglab.si.edu/collections/drawing-on-greatness-english/6OChARUW8tqgm3yz" target="_blank">"Drawing on Greatness</a>." That collection includes brief biographies, vocab words for context, and object and portrait visual analyses. It also includes questions to think about and quizzes on each woman for comprehension. A final activity encourages students to contribute other "famous first" women they might include in this collection.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><em>Meet Naomi Osaka</em></p>
<p dir="ltr">This Learning Lab collection about Naomi Osaka was originally created and published by the <a href="https://learninglab.si.edu/org/apac" target="_blank">Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center</a>. Supplementary objects and websites from the <a href="https://www.tennisfame.com/" target="_blank">International Tennis Hall of Fame </a>have been added to this learning lab. The collection is in a series of 30 collections based on the book, <em>We Are Here: 30 Inspiring Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who Have Shaped the United States</em>. Each collection includes images of objects in the Smithsonian collections and links to community-created resources, including videos, archives, and more. Each collection takes a deeper dive into important histories and stories related to each individual featured in the book to provide additional context about the cultures and societies they are connected with. To help summarize and reflect on what you learn about each individual in these collections, we have provided Harvard Project Zero thinking routines and reflection questions that can be used in the classroom, in library activities, and at home.</p>
<p dir="ltr"><em>We Are Here </em>is an anthology of stories about artists, activists, athletes, scientists, journalists, and more. These stories are bought to you by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center (APAC), one of 21 units (museums, archives, libraries, etc.) at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. We invite you to use this topical Learning Lab collection to learn more about individuals who have shaped the United States in critical ways through art-making, writing, or activism and who have been shaped by their global connections.</p>
