From card: "Cylinders of cottonwood, with faces cut out, as in prayer plumes. Three of these cylinders have terraced projections from the top of the head. One is plain and has a small spur. The latter is labeled "Oaka", male child. These objects resemble the gaming cups of the Hopi and Zuni, and are probably related to them."

PROVENIENCE NOTE: A LIST OF OBJECTS BY THE COLLECTOR, PADRE DUMAREST, DATED MAY 31, 1898, FILED IN THIS ACCESSION FILE REFERS TO "OAKA" WOODEN PIECES FOUND IN THE RUINS OF THE SAN FELIPE CHURCH AND "REPRESENTING CHILDREN, GIVEN BY THE SHIWANAS (RAINMAKERS) OR DANCERS OF THE SECRET DANCES TO THE ... (WOMEN) AS A HOPE OF FUTURE FECUNDITY." HOWEVER, IT IS NOT CERTAIN THAT THIS DESCRIPTION BELONGS TO #E219,158, AS THE ORIGINAL NUMBERS OF THE ACCESSION DO NOT CORRESPOND TO THOSE IN THIS CORRESPONDENCE.
