Back from the Brink: Black-Footed Ferrets

The westward expansion of the United States in the 19th century added millions of acres to our territory.  Thomas Jefferson stated "The fertility of the country, its climate and extent, promise in due season important aids to our treasury, an ample provision for our posterity, and a wide-spread field for the blessings of freedom."  Today, Americans still heavily depend on many resources and industries in the west.

However, with triumph often comes elements of tragedy.  Learn more about the black-footed ferret's brush with extinction through videos, images, and news articles.

Breaking Barriers: The Locomotive

This collection includes objects and resources related to transportation in the 19th century. The locomotive train broke barriers on transportation in the early 1800s. Travel was suddenly much faster than it used to be - the trip from New York to Boston, which by carriage would have been a day and a half, with the train was now less than a day. This allowed for easier travel not only of people, but of supplies such as food and raw goods, which helped in turn spur industry in the 19th century. Breaking Barriers: A Microscopic World

This collection includes objects and resources related to medicine in the 19th century. During this time, an incredibly huge scientific barrier was broken when scientists discovered bacteria and viruses, which could not be seen with the naked eye, could cause disease. This board will examine the scientific barrier that was broken into the microscopic world and how medicine and modern science changed due to such discoveries.  Additional resources on this topic can be found by visiting the National Museum of American History's online exhibitions at AmericanHistory.si.edu and History Explorer at HistoryExplorer.si.edu

Conflict and Compromise: Pittsburgh's Labor History

This collection connects the 2018 National History Day theme of "Conflict and Compromise in History" to a selection of labor strikes that occurred in Western Pennsylvania. This region has a long history of labor strikes,  some of which led to successful negotiations, while others led to violence. The collection also includes information about the Pittsburgh Survey to illuminate the living and working conditions that were often the reasons that compelled workers to strike.

These objects, images, and sources can be used to help form an idea for a project, provide a new angle on an existing project idea, or lead to new ways of including primary sources into NHD projects. The Heinz History Center blog features additional information about the Homestead Strike and Railroad Strike images.

This collection brings together EDSITEment and Smithsonian resources to support the initial research into a project for National History Day 2018, "Conflict and Compromise in History."

These resources - including protest posters, archival photographs, interviews, artwork, and articles - explore the topic of the Vietnam War from multiple perspectives. Resources highlight politics, the experience of soldiers, anti-war protests, and artwork created in reaction to the Vietnam War. The second tile of this collection contains questions to help with both the analysis of this historical event and the analysis of different types of resources (photograph, document, artwork, portrait, and object). National History Day: Chinese Exclusion Act
