Narrative and Storytelling as Tools to Combat Race Bias

In Kekla Magoon's novel How It Went Down (2014), Reverend Alabaster Sloan is asked if he believes that the shooting death of unarmed, 16-year-old Tariq Johnson is a case of race bias. From the perspective of eighteen characters, we piece-together the fragments of narrative hoping to arrive at the answer to the question "Who were you, Tariq Johnson?" (244) and determine 'How It Went Down'.

The following items in this collection are related to using narrative and storytelling as a means to combat race bias and empower high school juniors to tell powerful stories from their perspective in the world.

Our primary objectives are to create the conditions for deeper learning concerning social issues in the novel and to explore the power of narrative voice. This will be accomplished through a close reading of the text, analyzing character behaviors through the process of empathy mapping, and by critically evaluating four sets of documents in this collection:

1 - Photo of Nas (Nassir bin Olu Dara Jones) & his rap "Memory Lane" (Class 1 | Warm-Up Discussion)

2 - "HOPE" by Shepard Fairey, on display at the National Portrait Gallery & video-clip from a speech given by President Barack Obama following the death of Trayvon Martin, courtesy of the UK Telegraph (Class 2 | Warm-Up Discussion)

3 - Photo of children playing & PEW Research Survey: Perception of Race in America (Class 3 | Warm-Up Discussion)

4 - Photo of James Baldwin & his essay "If Black English Isn't a Language, Then Tell Me, What Is?" (Class 4 | Lesson)

*Bonus: Hope is in the Details - Video of a Smithsonian expert analyzing the HOPE poster

Items 1-3 were studied in conjunction with a close reading of Magoon's novel and the completion of empathy maps chronicling characters' first-hand experiences.
