What did money look like under colonial rule in West Africa?

How did colonialism affect the lives and livelihoods of Africans? The kinds of money people used can provide some clues. This collection contains coins and notes introduced by the colonial powers which  Africans received in return for the sale of produce and used for paying taxes. It also includes cowrie shells, kissi pennies and manillas, which Africans often used to buy everyday goods in local markets despite colonial government policies banning them.

Whale oil and Life by the Water

This collection was compiled originally as a collection of fishing in 18th and 19th century America. While compiling this collection it became clear that fishing at the time was dominated by a particular field of fishing called whaling. Whaling is the hunting of whales in order to use their oil for machine lubrication and fuel for oil lamps.

Thankfully the amount of whaling has drastically decreased in much of the world, largely due to the extreme hunting they were subjected to from the early 17th century onward. However, for early Americans this industry was the key for cheap fuel instead of being forced to by whale oil from oversea traders.

The purpose of this collection is to provide a window into an area of early American life that is not always focused on, life by the water. This collection shows Items used for whaling, the products garnered for whaling as well as art depicting life next to the water. We have maintained our relationship with water since life first crawled out of the ocean so many millions of years ago. Wherever your interests towards humanity may lean, water has always been and always will be entwined with our lives.

Westward Movement/Americans As An Invasive Species

The early years when America was expanding across the continent were a time of great upheaval. The Native American population was pushed aside, hunted, and exterminated as settlers moved inexorably westward. The native tribes fought back but they were outnumbered and outgunned. Tecumseh,  a Shawnee leader, tried to unite the tribes of the Midwest to fight back. The portrait of Tecumseh, "The Dying Tecumseh" shows a heroic warrior who failed in his quest to save his people. The painting "American Progress" shows the Westward Movement from the perspective of the settlers who believed they had a God-given right to settle the continent. The clash still reverberates in America.
