Boiler of the Freighter "Indiana" Emerges from Lake Superior

The boiler of the freighter "Indiana" is raised from the bottom of Lake Superior, where the ship sank in 1858. The salvage effort was jointly sponsored by the Smithsonian Institution, the United States Navy and the Army Corps of Engineers. Artifacts were sent to the National Museum of American History's collections storage at the Museum Support Center.
