DCPS Cornerstones
Welcome to the Smithsonian Learning Lab profile of the DC Public Schools Cornerstones Initiative!
To assure every student has access to transformative learning experiences, DC Public Schools has crafted a strategy for using high quality tasks, called Cornerstones, as a lever to improve teaching and learning system-wide.
Cornerstones are high-quality, powerful learning experiences that students engage with through the DCPS units of study. Developed by teachers, Cornerstones make meaningful real-world connections through engaging and rigorous content, and are taught through proven, high-impact instructional models. Students experience Cornerstones across all grade levels and content areas, including ELA, math, science, social studies, art, health and PE, and world languages. Cornerstones are taught as part of the DCPS curriculum and will be the learning experiences students will remember years from now. With the implementation of this content, DCPS seeks to provide equitable access to rigor, better professional development, and coherence and consistency across the curriculum, so that every student feels challenged and prepared to positively influence society and thrive in life.
