Engaging Students in Design Thinking

<p>Artists can raise our awareness of issues from the past and present and help us imagine alternatives for the future. In this workshop, museum educators will use artworks as a springboard for engaging participants in the design thinking process: discovery, interpretation, ideation, experimentation, and evolution. Teachers will consider how to integrate design thinking into lessons that challenge students to identify and address problems that may challenge scientists, historians, and writers.<br /></p><p><br /></p><p>Hosted by the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian American Art Museum</p>

East Baltimore Photography Survey

<p>This photographic survey captures a cross-section of East Baltimore residents and businesses in the 1970s, documenting the community’s history and diversity.  These photographs by Elinor Cahn, Joan Clark Netherwood, and Linda Rich were taken as part of a wider program of photography surveys sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts to celebrate the bicentennial of founding of the United States.</p> <p><strong><u><br>Background</u>:</strong></p> <p>In 1975, Congress considered a proposal by senator Walter Mondale to authorize funds for the American Bicentennial Photography and Film Project (ABPFP). In the proposal, Mondale referred to the epic documentary photography program undertaken by the Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression. Building on its legacy, the ABPFP would create a new visual record of the United States during the Bicentennial celebration of American independence. </p> <p>Mondale’s proposal was passed by Congress, but without the appropriation of funds. The NEA stepped forward, adding a Bicentennial State Film Projects category under its Public Media grants, and a Photography Surveys category under Visual Arts. The impact was transformative. Federal patronage was the single most important factor in the growth of American photography in the 1970s. The Photography Surveys grants were a central component of the NEA’s success. </p> <p>Between 1975 and 1981, a total of 219 photographers conducted 69 individual surveys in 30 states and 55 cities.</p> <p>The Smithsonian American Art Museum holds 13 of these surveys:</p> <ol><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&q=los+angeles+documentary&view=list&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&fq=-name%3A%22Eber%2C+Linda%22&fq=-name:%22Hernandez%2C+Anthony%22" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Los Angeles, CA</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?view=masonry&date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&q=long+beach+documentary" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Long Beach, CA</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&q=venice&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=name%3A%22Eber%2C+Linda%22&view=list&start=20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Venice, CA</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?view=list&date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&fq=-name%3A%22Eber%2C+Linda%22&fq=-name%3A%22Hernandez%2C+Anthony%22&q=atlanta+documentary" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Atlanta, GA</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&q=kansas+documentary&view=list&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&fq=-name%3A%22Eber%2C+Linda%22&fq=-name%3A%22Hernandez%2C+Anthony%22&start=0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lawrence, KS</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&q=kentucky+documentary&view=list&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&fq=name:%22Burke%2C+Bill%22" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Louisville, KY</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&q=kentucky+documentary&view=list&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&fq=-name%3A%22Eber%2C+Linda%22&fq=-name%3A%22Hernandez%2C+Anthony%22&fq=-name:%22Burke%2C+Bill%22" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Whitesburg, KY</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?q=galveston+&gfq=CSILP_1&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=name:%22Tichich%2C+Betty%22" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Galveston, TX</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?q=east+baltimore+documentary+survey+project&gfq=CSILP_1&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&start=20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Baltimore, MD</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&q=mars+hill&gfq=CSILP_1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mars Hill, NC</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1970s%2C1980s&q=buffalo%2C+new+york+documentary&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Friedlander%2C+Lee%22&fq=-name:%22Christo%22" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Buffalo, NY</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&q=seattle+documentary&gfq=CSILP_1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Seattle, WA</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&q=wyoming+survey&gfq=CSILP_1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cheyenne, WY</a> </li></ol> <p>Created for use with NEH's EDSITEment.</p> <p><strong>Keywords: </strong>US History, oral history, anthropology, CCOT, continuity and change over time</p> <ul></ul>
