<p>How can art prompt us (and our students!) to write?</p> <p>Explore different styles of writing in response to artwork included in the new <em>American Voices, American Visions </em>installation and modern galleries.</p>

<p>Zoom in on a small part of an artwork, tell stories, then zoom out! A discussion-based looking activity.</p>

<p>Work with your student to match artwork to music as a way to think about the various ways in which emotions are expressed in art. </p>

<p>This collection offers a subset of a larger photographic survey that documented Atlanta, GA in 1977 and 1979.  These photographs were taken as part of a wider program of photography surveys sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts to celebrate the bicentennial of founding of the United States.</p> <p><strong><u><br>Background</u>:</strong></p> <p>In 1975, Congress considered a proposal by senator Walter Mondale to authorize funds for the American Bicentennial Photography and Film Project (ABPFP). In the proposal, Mondale referred to the epic documentary photography program undertaken by the Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression. Building on its legacy, the ABPFP would create a new visual record of the United States during the Bicentennial celebration of American independence. </p> <p>Mondale’s proposal was passed by Congress, but without the appropriation of funds. The NEA stepped forward, adding a Bicentennial State Film Projects category under its Public Media grants, and a Photography Surveys category under Visual Arts. The impact was transformative. Federal patronage was the single most important factor in the growth of American photography in the 1970s.
