Perspectives on History: Designing Change

Artists express powerful opinions about defining moments and movements in American history. Their images may help raise public awareness or call the viewer to action. Zoom in on postage stamps and stand back from wall-sized murals to see how design, social issues, and persuasion come together in meaningful ways. Take home strategies for engaging students in evidence-based reasoning, argumentation, and persuasive writing.

No Mountains in the Way (The Kansas Survey)

<p>This collection offers a subset of images from a larger photographic survey documenting the area around Lawrence, KS in 1974.  These photographs were taken as part of a wider program of photography surveys sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts to celebrate the bicentennial of founding of the United States.</p> <p><strong><u><br>Background</u>:</strong></p> <p>In 1975, Congress considered a proposal by senator Walter Mondale to authorize funds for the American Bicentennial Photography and Film Project (ABPFP). In the proposal, Mondale referred to the epic documentary photography program undertaken by the Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression. Building on its legacy, the ABPFP would create a new visual record of the United States during the Bicentennial celebration of American independence. </p> <p>Mondale’s proposal was passed by Congress, but without the appropriation of funds. The NEA stepped forward, adding a Bicentennial State Film Projects category under its Public Media grants, and a Photography Surveys category under Visual Arts. The impact was transformative. Federal patronage was the single most important factor in the growth of American photography in the 1970s. The Photography Surveys grants were a central component of the NEA’s success. </p> <p>Between 1975 and 1981, a total of 219 photographers conducted 69 individual surveys in 30 states and 55 cities.</p> <p>The Smithsonian American Art Museum holds 13 of these surveys:</p> <ol><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&q=los+angeles+documentary&view=list&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&fq=-name%3A%22Eber%2C+Linda%22&fq=-name:%22Hernandez%2C+Anthony%22" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Los Angeles, CA</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?view=masonry&date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&q=long+beach+documentary" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Long Beach, CA</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&q=venice&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=name%3A%22Eber%2C+Linda%22&view=list&start=20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Venice, CA</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?view=list&date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&fq=-name%3A%22Eber%2C+Linda%22&fq=-name%3A%22Hernandez%2C+Anthony%22&q=atlanta+documentary" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Atlanta, GA</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&q=kansas+documentary&view=list&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&fq=-name%3A%22Eber%2C+Linda%22&fq=-name%3A%22Hernandez%2C+Anthony%22&start=0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Lawrence, KS</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&q=kentucky+documentary&view=list&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&fq=name:%22Burke%2C+Bill%22" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Louisville, KY</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1950s%2C1990s&q=kentucky+documentary&view=list&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Levinthal%2C+David%22&fq=-name%3A%22Eber%2C+Linda%22&fq=-name%3A%22Hernandez%2C+Anthony%22&fq=-name:%22Burke%2C+Bill%22" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Whitesburg, KY</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?q=galveston+&gfq=CSILP_1&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=name:%22Tichich%2C+Betty%22" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Galveston, TX</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?q=east+baltimore+documentary+survey+project&gfq=CSILP_1&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&start=20" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Baltimore, MD</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&q=mars+hill&gfq=CSILP_1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Mars Hill, NC</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?date.slider=1970s%2C1980s&q=buffalo%2C+new+york+documentary&fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&fq=-name%3A%22Friedlander%2C+Lee%22&fq=-name:%22Christo%22" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Buffalo, NY</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&q=seattle+documentary&gfq=CSILP_1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Seattle, WA</a> </li><li><a href="https://collections.si.edu/search/results.htm?fq=data_source%3A%22Smithsonian+American+Art+Museum%22&fq=object_type%3A%22Photographs%22&q=wyoming+survey&gfq=CSILP_1" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" data-auth="NotApplicable">Cheyenne, WY</a> </li></ol> <p><strong>Keywords: </strong>US History, oral history, anthropology, CCOT, continuity and change over time</p> <p><br></p>
