Ellen is the Primary Years Programme (PYP) Coordinator at Belvedere Elementary. Belvedere is a Title I, International Baccalaureate public school. The Professional Development Collaborative at Washington International School has provided her with many opportunities to learn about Harvard's Project Zero Thinking Routines and global competencies through the Washington International School Summer Institute for Teachers. As a result she has created several collections over the past few years with thinking routines and global competency in mind. Her collections have been designed for teachers to use in classrooms, families in her community during the pandemic, and for the Museums Go Global Project. #goglobal

Fabulous Feathered Friends

<p>I created this collection for families to do together while schools are closed. I will be making a collection a day while we are out of school. Today we will be exploring birds. The idea is for families to look at the items in the collection and consider what they see in the objects and paintings, what they think, and what they wonder. Families can also watch a free Brainpop video about birds as well as explore birds you can see from your window. Families can  watch science videos and read articles about birds. Eight Legged Fantastic!

<p></p><p>I created this collection for families to do together while schools are closed. I will be making a collection a day while we are out of school. Today we will be exploring spiders. The idea is for families to look at the items in the collection and consider what they see in the objects and paintings, what they think, and what they wonder. Families can also watch a free Brainpop video about spiders and arachnids as well as listen to the read aloud <u>Sophia's Masterpiece</u>. Families can  watch science videos and read articles about spiders and scorpions. They can also explore art inspired by spiders and Spiderman the superhero. Civil Rights: One Act - The 1968 Olympics

<p>I created this small collection for my students to consider the roles of each individual in this photograph. When they engaged in the See, Think, Wonder thinking routine many of them wanted to know more about the white man wearing a medal and why he wasn't raising his fist. They generated many additional questions around this idea. I added the ESPN video to help the think more about the photo and its meaning. We had a class discussion that revisited their questions from the day before.</p>

Circles of Fun: Hula Hooping

1, 2, 3, 4 Bicycles Galore!

<p>I created this collection for families to do together while schools are closed. I will be making a collection a day while we are out of school. Today we will be exploring the bicycle. The idea is for families to look at the items in the collection and consider what they see in the objects and paintings, what they think, and what they wonder. Families can watch a video about bicycle safety. Once you have gone through some of the collection using the See, Think, Wonder thinking routine consider using the <a href="https://pz.harvard.edu/sites/default/files/Imagine%20if%20-%20for%20younger%20children.pdf">Imagine If</a> thinking routine from Agency By Design. As a family you can talk about how to make a better bicycle. How can it be more effective (work better)? More efficient (easier or faster)? More ethical (better for the community, safer, more fair)? More beautiful? Beyond Monarchs: Animal Migration

<p>This collection starts with monarch butterflies and their migration. My hope was to remind the second graders about what they have already learned about monarchs. </p> <p>Once the students' background knowledge is activated then the students can participate in the Tuning In activity. Students will analyze the art piece using the Harvard's Project Zero Thinking Routine: See, Think, Wonder. </p> <p>Once the students have made their thinking visible then the class will find more out by learning about the art piece from the artist and learning about bird migrations. The students will engage in the Harvard Global Thinking Routine The 3 Ys.<br /></p> <p>To push the students beyond flying animals the Going Further section will expose the  students to migrations of animals on land, air, and see. The students will end this section using the Thinking Routine Think, Puzzle, Explore. Students can then have time to research about animals on their own.</p>
