Structural Dimension by Aleah Leary

The theme of my collection is Structural Dimension. During my time Here at Cooper Hewitt, I have spent my time designing different pieces that have had many points of view/ perspectives. We have played with different materials and dimensions (2-D and 3-D) that have been used to create solutions to different problems and prompts in a very unique way. In my collection I have included images of items that I have created and items that I feel add to my theme of structural design.

Cooper Hewitt Design Scholars' Design Explorations

The Spring 2020 Cooper Hewitt Design Scholars, a group of high school students with an interest in pursuing design as a career path, have explored design through independent research into topics of interest in design, ranging from contemporary fashion design to surrealism to an exploration of silk. Below, find their collections, created as part of these explorations. Bravo, Cooper Hewitt Design Scholars!

Fashion as a Form of Protest in 20th Century America: Lara Caligor

The 1960's and the 1970's were a tumultuous time in American History. Events such as the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam war and Second Wave Feminism majorly affected American culture. Social movements working for equality consisted mainly of young people who attempted to push boundaries not only of social constructs but of fashion. This collection explores the development of fashion in the 1960's in conjunction with rapid change in American society.

Designing For Accessibility–Tova Kleiner

This Learning Lab showcases different examples of accessible design in order to provide a fuller understanding of what designing for accessibility can look like. The collection shown here includes designs that address physical, cognitive, and emotional barriers that impact the lives of people with disabilities. This Learning Lab explores design for the blind, for wheelchair accessibility, for the elderly, and for people with autism. Through the DesignPrep Scholars program, I have learned about various design disciplines and focuses. DesignPrep Scholars gave me the opportunity to meet several inspirational designers and do many design projects. Throughout this experience, I have been especially drawn to design that is inclusive and accessible. This Learning Lab is the culmination of my work at DesignPrep Scholars and displays what I have learned about accessible design.

#designthinking
