<p>This collection contains art from the greater Civil Rights Movement from the 1950's-1970's. It also contains art from subsequent time periods that are connected in theme, topic, or concept to the greater Civil Rights Movement. In this instance, the greater Civil Rights Movement refers to the movement to end segregation and to enforce and expand rights for African Americans (the Civil Rights Movement proper), the Chicano Rights Movement, the Chicano Labor Movement, the Feminist or Women's Liberation Movement, the start of the Gay Rights Movement, and the American Indian Movement. <p>This is a collection of self-portraits. Self-portraits are portraits of an artist made by the artists themselves. Many self-portraits are reflections of the creator and may express ideas, narratives, or aspects of identity that are important to the artist. Some self-portraits may seem "straight forward", "accurate", or otherwise "typical", while others may not. As creators of their own portrait, some artists can choose to incorporate their own personal artistic styles, idealizations, messages, or other characteristics that contribute to the self-portraits complexity and unique art form. </p>
