Jiayanyi Wang

I am an American popular music and Hip-Hop lover from China, as well as a Hip-Hop dancer. When I first heard the rhythm of Hip-Hop music, I fell in love with this style of music. My love for Hip-Hop culture is not limited to music, I also like Hip-Hop dance. Dancing is how I express myself, and when I'm dancing hip-hop, I feel free and energized. Although I am from China, I have developed a strong interest in American Hip-Hop culture and popular music.

The origins of Hip-Hop in the 1970s

The purpose of this collection is to analyze and appreciate the origins and development of 1970s Hip-Hop and its impact on American culture. I hope it helps more people understand Hip-Hop. Its content types include videos, images of musicians, and links to articles.

Hip-Hop, has its origins in the Bronx, New York City, during the 1970s. It emerged as a form of expression for African American and Latino youth in inner-city neighborhoods, who faced social and economic challenges. The roots of Hip-Hop can be traced to block parties and gatherings in the Bronx, where DJs played funk, soul, and disco records, creating a lively and danceable atmosphere. In addition to DJs, early Hip-Hop culture involved emcees (now known as rappers). Another crucial element in the birth of Hip-Hop was graffiti art. The 1970s and early 1980s saw the rise of iconic Hip-Hop artists and groups, such as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Run-D.M.C., and The Sugarhill Gang, who helped popularize the genre and its unique style.

#MUST1963Summer23

Article/Text References:

Black History in Two Minutes or So. The Birth of Hip Hop [Audio Video (youtube)]. https://youtu.be/10C-Q3NIlzU.

LowFi Groover. The Baby Huey Story - The Living Legend (Full Album) [Audio Video (youtube)]. https://youtu.be/m-6xWpcPmlk.

Tommy Boy. Afrika Bambaataa & The Soulsonic Force - Planet Rock (Official Music Video) [HD] [Audio Video (youtube)]. https://youtu.be/9J3lwZjHenA.

mark bennett. S01E06 The Get Down Battle is On [Audio Video (youtube)]. https://youtu.be/dM0LMwcL8mM

Zarndi. The Last Poets - When The Revolution Comes [Audio Video (youtube)]. https://youtu.be/8M5W_3T2Ye4.

HeatRayz Video. A Hip Hop Timeline # 1: 1970-1979 - The Pre-History of Hip Hop [Audio Video (youtube)]. https://youtu.be/Qas-WiE-pxA.

Sugarhill Records. The Sugarhill Gang - Rapper's Delight (Official Video) [Audio Video (youtube)]. https://youtu.be/mcCK99wHrk0.

Sugarhill Records. Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - The Message (Official Video)[Audio Video (youtube)]. https://youtu.be/PobrSpMwKk4.

CUNY TV. History of Hip Hop in the Bronx - Arts in the City [Audio Video (youtube)]. https://youtu.be/D5ZpQ73R_z4.

From: ATL VIBES. The History of Hip-Hop in the 1970s. POSTED AUGUST 19, 2019 NEWS, https://atlvibes.com/2019/08/19/the-history-of-hip-hop-in-the-1970s/.

Fuller, Bria J.(2023). HIP HOP’S IMPACT ON AMERICA. December 15, 2019, https://commons.trincoll.edu/briahiphopportfolio/2019/12/15/hip-hops-impact-on-america/.

From: Icon Collective, LLC. HIP HOP HISTORY: FROM THE STREETS TO THE MAINSTREAM. https://www.iconcollective.edu/hip-hop-history.

[Digital image] Your Voice is Power. “DJ Kool Herc”. https://www.yourvoiceispower.ca/module-2/music-as-a-way-to-express-voice.
