Pyrex History

Pyrex is a brand of Corning Inc. that was introduced to American markets in 1915. Pyrex is known for its low thermal expansion borosilicate glass that was used in both laboratory glassware and kitchenware. Most famously, Pyrex is known for its colorful and decorative bowls, baking pans, dishes, mugs, and other kitchenware. These colorful patterns have become a collectors find, especially with rare patterns, and can reach high prices in the resale and collectors market. Pyrex continues to make kitchenware and other glassware today, but it is its vintage styles that many people love and has a dedicated following. Many museums that are part of the Smithsonian Institution contain various types of Pyrex products, from the more recognizable kitchenware to scientific and non-kitchenware uses. This collection intends to showcase the different types of Pyrex and contains bowls, laboratory glassware, and other objects that use the Pyrex glass with the Smithsonian Institution.
