Alma Thomas: Visual Music

<p>Exploring the relationship between music and art with the paintings of Alma Thomas.</p> <p>SKILL: As musicians and artists, we will “read” color, pattern, shape, and line and create music of our own.</p> <p>CONTENT: Music comes in different styles, moods, and rhythms. The combination of these allows us to express ideas and emotions.</p> <p>SEQUENCING: This lesson requires some basic knowledge of musical terms such as beat, melody, instruments, mood, volume, rhythm.</p> <p dir="ltr">Consider pre-teaching this content with a brief introduction to Alma Thomas. Alma Thomas: Window on Nature

<p>Discovering through art how plants and animals change over time.</p> <p dir="ltr">SKILL: As scientists and artists, we will look closely (observe) and make educated guesses (hypotheses).</p> <p dir="ltr">CONTENT: Plants and animals change over time.</p> <p>PROTOCOL: The <em>Move,</em> <em>Extension</em>, and <em>Observe & Hypothesize</em> portions of this lesson facilitate partner work and full class discussion, while the <em>Demonstrate Understanding</em> section allows for individual work using a guided worksheet.</p> <p dir="ltr">Pre-teaching the parts of a plant and the life cycle of plants will be helpful.<br></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>This Learning Lab collection was created by Roey Leonardi, a student in the summer 2022 Smithsonian Digital Learning and Engagement Internship, in collaboration with Emerson Collective and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. #SAintern</em><em><br></em></p> <p><em>This project received support from the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative.</em></p> <p dir="ltr"><em><br></em></p>

Alma Thomas: Problem Solving

<p dir="ltr">Empathize with artist Alma Thomas to design innovative solutions to physical challenges.</p> <p dir="ltr">SKILL: As designers, we will make close observations, empathize with a product end user, and iterate to solve problems.</p> <p dir="ltr">CONTENT: Design problems have multiple solutions, some of which are more or less appropriate for a variety of end users.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>MATERIALS:</strong></p> <ul><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Note taking supplies (large sheets of paper, markers, etc.)</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Paint (watercolor and acrylic)</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Paintbrushes (large and small)</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Cardboard (from boxes)</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Tables</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Chairs</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Masking tape</p></li><li dir="ltr"><p dir="ltr">Pencils</p></li></ul> <p dir="ltr"><strong>PRE-TEACH: </strong>This two-day activity will be most effective if students are familiar with the design process.
