<p><strong>How can American art by war veterans help us better understand the complexities of war?</strong></p> <p>Let's explore artworks from the Smithsonian American Art Museum's collection, by five different artist-veterans: Claggett Wilson (WWI), Harold Tovish (WWII), H. C. Westermann (WWII, Korean War), Jesse Treviño (Vietnam War), and Ehren Tool (Gulf War).</p> <p>Designed for grades 7-12.  Artworks are accompanied by questions for discussion or for response in writing. This collection also features two short videos with accompanying questions. Please utilize as much or as little of this resource as you see fit (ex. select an artist/artworks from a time period you're studying in class). Artists appear in chronological order according to their birth date and the war/s they served in.</p>
