Wetlands and Climate Change Data and Lessons

Wetlands are a critically important ecosystem in coastal environments. They are, however, threatened by the effects of climate change.

In these activities, students will work with data from SERC's Global Change Research Wetland to explore the effects of elevated carbon dioxide and sea level rise on marsh plants. One activity explores the effect of increased carbon dioxide on marsh plant growth. In the second activity, students will explore the effects of sea level rise on marsh plant communities. Both activities build student data literacy through graphing data and interpreting results.

Ecosystems on the Edge

This collection brings together materials related to understanding the importance of and threats to wetlands across the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Included are a StoryMap that provides background on wetlands, their importance to coastal ecosystems, and how they are threatened by human activities. There is a video included that provides background on wetlands research being conducted at SERC. The collection also includes classroom activities that use data from SERC's Global Change Research Wetland to learn more about the effects of climate change on marsh ecosystems. One activity explores the effect of increased carbon dioxide on marsh plant growth. In the second activity, students will explore the effects of sea level rise on marsh plant communities. Both activities build student data literacy through graphing data and interpreting results.

Waterway Well-being: Chesapeake Bay Water Quality

This collection brings together materials related to understanding water quality in Chesapeake Bay waterbodies.

Included are a StoryMap that provides an overview of water quality, how its measured, and what poor water quality means for aquatic ecosystems. The collection also includes two activities. One activity involves a student field trip to a local stream where the students sample and quantify macroinvertebrates. Students then analyze their data in the classroom and make conclusions about the health of their local stream. In the second activity, students analyze authentic data collected from three streams in Maryland to explore relationships between water quality measurements and macroinvertebrate communities.
