Diary entries from Mary Henry and Ella Gertrude Clanton Thomas during the Civil War.
Notes to Other Users
I would use these sources to teach students to analyze a diary entry and ask them to consider the question: Was there a distinction between the homefront and the battleground of the Civil War? This would be a one-day lesson where we would analyze an excerpt of the diary of Mary Henry using the 4 C's of Textual Analysis as whole group. Then in small groups, students would analyze the diary entry of Ella Gertrude Clanton Thomas using the 4 C's in small groups. Given both pieces of evidence, students would then respond to the lesson question by writing a thesis statement and supporting it with two citations from the diaries. The next day or the day before, the lesson can be supported with letters from soldiers at the battlefront and students can consider the same question.
