"Wa-ree" [Wari] Game board

NMNH - Anthropology Dept.
From card: "Illus. in USNM [Annual} Rept, 1894; Pl. 5, page 604." Identified there as "Board for Wa-We (Mancala), Island of St. Lucia, Collected by Rev. F. Gardiner." See also p. 605 in this publication, where this artifact is discussed, including how it is played, and the name of the game is transcribed as Wa-wee.

Locality changed from "South Africa (?)" to "Caribbean / St. Lucia (?)". Catalog card gives St. Lucia as the locality, but does not say who made this attribution or why. The ledger book simply says "Africa?". The accession file includes a small note from the curator at the time, asking the memo's recipient to ask the donor where the "wa-ree" was from, but there is no reply. However, the rest of the collection comes from Barbados, and a letter from the donor mentions his travels in many countries of the Caribbean, with no mention of Africa. Therefore, it seems likely that the game board is from the Caribbean, not Africa.

700 lire Pope John Paul II Trip to Columbia, St. Lucia single

National Postal Museum
On October 27, 1987, the Vatican issued a series of eight definitive stamps featuring the journeys of Pope John Paul II (1920-2005) during 1985 and 1986.

The 700-lire stamp commemorates the pope's journey to Colombia and St. Lucia, July 1-8, 1986. The stamp features a profile of the pope, a Colombian Indian woman, a child, and two women of St. Luca. At the right is the Cathedral of Bogota and in the background a Colombian person with an ancient ceramic.

The stamps are horizontal, measure 40 x 30 mm, and have a perforation of 14 x 13 1/4. Produced on white chalky paper in multicolor rotogravure print, the stamps were issued in sheets of twenty. Each stamp includes the dates of the journey, the names of the places visited, the value, and the words POSTE VATICANE. Professor Renato Cristiano designed the series.

Smithsonian Libraries
Five new species of Paectes Hubner [1818] related to Paectes arcigera (Guenee) (Puerto Rico, U. S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Guadeloupe, Dominica, St. Lucia, Trinidad) and P. longiformis Pogue (Brazil) are described: P. asper sp. n. (Florida, Bahamas, Cuba, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, British Virgin Islands, U. S. Virgin Islands, Dominica, Colombia), P. medialba sp. n. (Argentina), P. similis sp. n. (Brazil), P. sinuosa sp. n. (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay), and P. tumida sp. n. (Colombia, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana). Adults and genitalia are illustrated for all species. Taxonomic changes include the rev. stat. of P. nana (Walker) (Florida, Greater Antilles, Mexico, Guatemala, Galapagos) as a valid species and revised synonyms P. indefatigabilis Schaus and P. isabel Schaus as junior synonyms of P. nana instead of P. arcigera. New host records for P. sinuosa and P. nana reared on Brazilian peppertree (Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, Anacardiaceae) are presented. The holotype and female genitalia of P. obrotunda (Guenee) are illustrated.
