The Aepyornis bones were excavated in 2008 from a pit 15 meters deep in a layer of gray clay dated at 10,000 BP at a site south east of Ilakakabe Village, and adjacent to the Ivatofotsy River, by a team from Stony Brook University, Duke University, and University of Antananarivo.
