Roman Kenk, a Research Associat,e at the National Museum of Natural History in his exhaustive library of published research on flatworms. Kenk, 84, began a lifetime of research on the ecology, physiology and systematics of freshwater flatworms (Turbellaria) at the University of Graz in Austria. When he retired from the Library of Congress in 1965, he came to the Smithsonian to build a flatworm specimen collection and library.

2012 AERC Research Symposium

The Fifth Annual Meeting will be held in Washington DC 2012-10-17 (Wednesday) and 2012-10-18 (Thursday). The theme of this year's meeting is "Continental-scale ecology: informing our national priorities". This is the first joint annual meeting between the Association for Ecosystem Research Centers (AERC) and NEON, Inc. The theme of AERC's meeting is "The Role of Ecosystem Science in National Security". All AERC and NEON meeting events will be open to registered attendees, providing a rich suite of opportunities to learn about emerging topics and network with scientists from different communities.

Full film record of a research film project documenting the Zimba, a pastoral Bantu people of southwestern Angola. Footage documents the organization of Zimba homesteads, role of women in the domestic economy, and men engaged in pastoral activities. Sequences include: women threshing, winnowing, and stamping millet (for cereal and beer); milking cows; watering cattle; weaving baskets; and making fences to protect their fields. Men are shown churning milk and herding and watering cattle.

Mary Baker, polymer chemist at the Smithsonian's Conservation Analytical Laboratory, and conservation fellow Eric Lange inspect a Project Mercury spaceflight boot and astronaut Donald "Deke" Slayton's Mercury training suit. They use differential scanning calorimetry to study samples of new rubber, as well as samples from deaccessioned suits such as this one, to determine the extent of crystallization in order to establish proper storage and handling procedures for the suits.

Footage documents the organization of Kuvale homesteads and styles of dress and adornment. Various leisure, child-rearing, and domestic activities include: hairdressing, women grinding grain and milking cows, men butchering animals, and prepartion of meals.
