This brass pick counter is marked “CHAS. LOWINSON / SOLE AGENT N.Y” and “PAT. OCT. 20 – 08” and “PAT. SEPT. 20 – 10” and (on back) “CHRONIK BROS / MFRS. N.Y.” According to advertisements, the form was used by appraisers at the Port of New York, and the Quartermaster Dept. in Philadelphia. August Chronik (1862-1942) and his brother Louis (1864-) were born in Hungary, came to the United States in the early 1880s, and invented or improved several mechanical devices. The inscription on this brass pick (thread) counter reads “ALFRED SUTER, N.Y.” Alfred Suter (1880-1947) was born in Switzerland, came to the United States at a young age, and became a successful textile engineer. One pick counter that Suter introduced to market in 1922 had a lens so designed that “the operator is not required to put his eye directly on the glass, and inspection can be made at any convenient distance from the sample.” Ref: “Pick Counter,” Textile World 61 (Nov. 18, 1922): 65.
