Lacquer Stand Perry Expedition

NMNH - Anthropology Dept.
From card: "Red lacquer, 1859. [Attributed to the Perry Expedition.] The accession files do not give any information to elaborate on this attribution, they merely give this note after the specimen. Therefore, if it is true, it would have to have come from some member of the crew who had acquired it personally while on this Exped. and passed it on to someone with this information. Jan. 1969 - R. Elder."

Matthew Perry died March 4, 1858, so the 1859 date in the records might indicate the piece was acquired sometime not long after his death?
