The One & Only 9 Awards For Community Service WUSA Award
Anacostia Community Museum
Caption: This award was presented to Walter C. Pierce in 1990 for his work with the Ontario Lakers and the Adams Morgan community by WUSA, a Washington, D.C. local news network. Pierce started the Ontario Lakers as a teenager, making a baseball field in an empty lot and assembling a team of local youths. This focus on constructive community work served as an inspiration to the young team members and a service to the neighborhood, as it provided an accessible, locally owned recreation space. Pierce also led several campaigns, including crafting classes, an urban gardening project and a recycling initiative. He was engaged in local DC politics, running for a position to represent Ward 1 on the DC Board of Education and testifying in various hearings to secure funding and protect the land upon which the Lakers played.
