I am an 8th grade teacher for a fascinating middle school in Arlington County, Kenmore Middle School. We are an arts integration school that is evolving into a STEAM focus. I come to 8th grade after teaching high school for ten years and college for another 10. I've taught teachers for years, but recently came back to the classroom to focus on 8th graders and their writing processes. I use art to scaffold activities for developing writers!

Memoirs & Portraits: Creating Dynamic Characters
<p>This collection supports students to write their own memoirs and is aligned to the Teacher's College Reading Writing Project (TCRWP) Memoir Writing Unit. One objective of this unit is students will create "well-developed characters who change." Through the examination of portraits matched with mentor texts, students have the opportunity to examine how artists capture the complexity of people through visual art and language.</p>
